Vor Frue Kirke, at one lime the most magnificent of our churches, is at present more imposing than truly beautiful. The very spot where the church now stands has been the site of a church in honour of Our Lady since the 12th century. For some centuries it served as the coronation church, was reconstructed several times and has had a number of splendid spires, but these as well as the church itself were sorely tried in the course of years. During the siege by the Swedes the spire was marked by the balls of the enemy, and in the great con flagration in 1728 both tower and church were burned. The church was rebuilt, but again levelled to the ground during the bombardment by the Fmglish in 1807. From 1811— 29 the church was rebuilt by C. F. Hansen, who gave it its present heavy and dull appearance. The in terior of the church is imposing by its spaciousness and its arched ceiling studded with stars, and when illuminated
