BERTEL THORVALDSEN was born in this place 19. November 1770.

We now go along Ostergade to Amagerlorv, where to the right stands an old historic edifice: »Dy v e k e s or S c h o u s t r u p s Ho u s e « with a tine renaissance facade. Further on past Niels Hemmingsensgade on the right is the »H e l l i g a a n d s k i r k e « (PI. G. 9), originally a cloister church, often rebuilt, last in 1878—80 by Professor Storch. The stylish interior has especially in later years by dona tions from capitalists been splendidly adorned. The win dows of the choir for instance were ornamented with costly glass-paintings on the occasion of the golden wedding of the King and Queen and later on the back-wall of the church was decorated with a beautiful painting by Joa chim Skovgaard. Built on to the church is He l l i g - a a n d s hu s e t (PI. j. G. 9) the tastefully renovated cloister building facing Walkendorfsgade. Here was (from 1226) a hospital, in which the Helligaands (the Holy Ghost) friars tended the sick. In an old account of this hospital is said: „Biit if you wish to see to whom you are giving alms then — when you go to Copenhagen on some busi ness — walk into the house of Helliggeist (the Holy Ghost) in the middle of the town; there you will find a door open before you; go up one side and'down another and behold the number of poor lying on the beds". From 1569 the place was turned into an eating-house for poor students, but an account from 1604 shows that they did not only eat here; it says that 100 students in 8 days drank 18 casks of German beer in the place! Later on it was used as a mortuary and now after the renovation it is used as assembly rooms. The old churchyard is laid out in grounds. Thence we proceed by Vimmelskaflet to G a mm e l and Ny t o r v (old- and new-market), which arc forming one square surrounded by many beaufiful old mansions. To the right a peculiar old fountain from the time of Christian IV, completely restored in 1892. On the King’s birthday it is, according to old 'custom, playing with golden apples. To the left is the old Ra a d - og D o m -
