A few steps down Amaliegade, to the right of the statue, is a stately, grey building bearing a memorial ta blet, the inscription of which says: »He r e dwe l t the p o e t A d am 0 e h l e n s c h l a g e r at his death the 20. January 1850.« When the King inhabits the palace, a p a r a d e o f the g u a r d s takes place every day at noon in Amalienborg square. The corner properties by Bredgade are two old, elegant palaces; the one to the right is now the piano factory of Messrs Ilornung & Moller. The ground floor of the palace to the left, Ki n g Ge o r g s Palse, is the residence of Ilis Royal Highness Prince Carl and H. R. H. Princess Maud, while the Supreme Court occu pies the upper story. (Through Bredgade cars to the right to 0sterbro, to the left to Kongens Nytorv, Veslerbro, Frederiksberg and Christanshavn). F r e d e r i k s k i r k e n or the Ma r b l e c h u r c h (PJ. F. 11), as it is generally called, was for 125 years left stan ding as a ruin. The foundation stone was laid by King Fre- dcrik V on the anniversary of the 300 years jubilee of the accession to the throne of the House of Oldenburg (the 30. Oct. 1749). The church was to be so magnificent that its equal was not to be found outside of Italy. In 1770 the work, which was conducted by a French architect J a r d i n , had to be stopped for want of money; the church had then already swallowed the considerable sum of 800,000 Rigsdollars. In the eighties the unfinished building, which was practically a ruin, was bought by the well-known financier T i e t g e n , director of the Privatbank, who had it finished though in smaller dimensions than originally intended. The richly ornamented coppereoated dome of the church is, however, only a few feet smaller in dia meter than that of St. Peters church in Rome. The church Avas consecrated on 19. Aug. 1894.
