I shall endeavour to pursue tke taskof deline­ ating the effects resulting from the event. They have combined to give a stability to the condi­ tion of our country, which, considering its circumscribed means, yields in firmness to none. One of the consequences of the engagement, was the origin of that fund, which in the year 1802, accumulated to upwards of 50,0001.— The interest of this sum is applicable to the maintenance, relief and education of about G50 persons, who were either individually sufferers,* or who had lost their wives, their husbands, or their children. At the decease of any of these, or when they are otherwise provided for, the portion employed in their maintenance reverts to the capital, which, naturally, in the course of many peaceful years, will prove a great encou­ ragement for men chearfully to meet danger in the defence of their country.
