of peril been taught to whom they might look up for defence, caused an entire reform to take place in the military system of the country.— Germans were for ever banished our service, and equality has been established among all, who according to the constitution, are liable to serve as soldiers. Rich and poor indiscrimi nately share these duties. After the expira tion of six years, (for this time must be served,) they are entered in the militia, which differs materially from that of other countries.— The service being familiar to them, they are merely now and then, exercised at their homes, to protect which, they are only to be called upon in future. After the 45th year of their age, they are no longer subject to the duties of soldiers, except on an emergency ; and then to carry such arms, as their enfeebled frames will allow them, for instance, scythes, forks, &c.— Thus a force of upwards of 70,000 are con stantly ready, which added to the regular army and volunteers in war time, give Denmark the protection of about 200,000 men, who
