tlemen to the erection of a simple monument, on the spot where the slain were buried.— Twelve hundred dollars were presently col­ lected, for most persons paid more than the sti­ pulated price. On the 2 d of April, 1802, the foundation stone was laid by Commodore Fischer, who deposited a medal containing the names of those 18 ships which chiefly sustained the heat of the engagement. The Right Rev. Dr. Block, delivered an appropriate discourse on the occasion, and after the ceremony, all the officers repaired to the Palace, where they re­ ceived from the Prince Royal gold Medals of Honor. At the same instant others, in silver, were distributed at the admiralty, to the petty officers, seamen, soldiers, and volunteers, who had entitled themselves to distinction. The medal, on one side, represents a Lion on the stern of a Roman vessel, holding in one paw a shield, emblazoned with the Danish arms, and in the other an uplifted club ; the super­ scription— C ourage d efen d s ; beneath —T iie 2d of A pr il , 1801.
