45 roof on the beautiful tall h o s e - t o w e r , where the fire­ hose are hung up at their full length. (Besides this station there are 5 stations in Copenhagen.) Opposite the station is the back of the new town hall, the 6th in number of lownhalls in Copenhagen. The imposing pile of the town- hall (Raadhus), the foundation stone of which was laid in 1892 (estimated cost 5 Millions Kr.), is expected to be finished before 1900 and is worth seeing (designed by archi­ tect M. Nyrop, who superintends the work). Besides pro­ ducing an effect by beautiful forms and imposing masses, the architect has also understood how to use little means, the nicely worked details, the ever varying ornaments of lime­ stone over the windows and doors etc., the part around the pigeon tower opposite Tivoli may be called exceedingly fine. The building should be viewed from all sides. In the niche in the facade towards Vesterbro will be placed a statue in embossed copper, representing Bishop Absalon, the founder of the town (modelled by Professor Bissen), on the roof 6 bronze-figures, representing 6 watchmen from different periods and the coat of.arms of the city in embossed copper. On the corners two polar bears. At the middle of the facade towards the Raadhusplads a mighty tower with coppercoated sphre will rise imposingly towards heaven (324 feet- high). On the square in front of the tower facade stands a copy in bronze of Michelangelo's David, a donation by Mr. Carl Jacobsen. Continuing along the Town-hall you see to the left anold red building »Va r t ov « (PI. d. II. 9), a charitable institution for 450 old men and women (founded in 1666). Farther along the town-hall to the facade towards the fire-station on the corners of which will be placed bronze-figures under slone canopies. The interior of the town-hall, the offices, ar­ chives, assembly-room and the vaulls will be splendidly adorned and in the middle of the block will be two court­ yards, of which one will be covered with a glass roof, for assemblies of the people, the other one will be open.
