Still in progress of ma­ king is another equestrian monument, Anna Marie Carl- Nielsens monument to Chris­ tian IX , which is to be erec­ ted a t Christiansborg palace toward the riding-ground. One of the oldest and finest monuments is the Obelisk of Liberty (see page 100) erec­ ted in 1797 on Vesterbro in commemoration of the eman­ cipation of the peasants. The foot of the obelisk is designed by Nic Abildgaard, the four statues of women are by the

sculptors Johannes Wiede- welt, A. W eidenhaupt and Nic. Dajon. The oldest monuments io civil persons were the monu­ mental stone to the poet Knud Lyne Ralibelc and his wife (by Iletseh and II. F. Freund) erected in 1833 in llalibeks A116 and the bust of the botanist Joachim Frederik Schouw, erected on Frue Plads (by the university) in 185G. These were followed by a number of busts of men, who­ se names were associated with the university or the church: the bishops //. L. Martensen and 1. P. Mynster, the composer Weyse, the university- professors II. K. Clausen, I. N. Madvig and Japetus Steen- strup. The oldest statue of a civil
