»The Marble Church« or Frederiks Church. (Frederiksgade between St. Kongensgade and Bredgade). (See page 18). The foundation stone of the church was laid by Frederik V on the 30th October 1749 on the 300th anniversery of the reign of the Oldenborg Kings. St. Peters, Rome, was taken as a model, and the King’s purpose was to erect a church of such magnificence as could not be matched outside Ilaly. In this he was not suecessful. The work, which was commenced by the architect Eigtved and, after the death of the latter, conti- nued on still more expensive lines by the French architect Jardin, had to be entirely suspended in 1770 owing to lack of funds. The building had already then absorbed the no inconsiderable sum which today would represent about five million kroner. Over one hundred years was to elapse before the work was again resumed. The badly decayed ruin together with the surrounding land was in 1875 turned over to the Danish commercial magnate C. F. Tietgen, on condition that he had the church completed. Nineteen years later it was consecrated on the lOth August 1894 (architect Meldahl). True the building has not the dimen sions originally planned, but is nevertheless of a very respectable size, the huge dome (lieight 80 M.) giving it an exceedingly monumental effect. Along the balustrade on the roof stand 18 large statues of prominent men in tåie history of the Christian Church from Moses to Luther. Michel Angelo’s Statue of Moses has been placed in the square in front of the church. On the right and left of the main entrance there are statues re presenting Ansgar and Grundtvig, and round the building outside there are several statues of famous clergymen in tlie Danish church: Knud the holij, Peder Palladius, Hans Egede, Brorson and Kingo. The i n t e r i o r of the church is an imposing circular building. The inside height of the dome is 43 M. and: its diameter is only some few metres less than that of St. Peters Rome. The spherical vault is divided into twelve spaces with paintings representing the Apostles, on a blue background. There is a magnificent temple-sliaped altar of marble and woodwork with a gilded cross between the pillars. The font is by Stephan Sinding. A d m i s i o n : daily 9—2; Tower (fine view) 9—6 summer; 9—6 in winter, charge 25 Ore.
»Marmorkirken« eller Frederiks Kirken. (Frederiksgade mellem St. Kongensgade og Bredgade). (111. Side 18). A d g a n g : Hverdage 9—2; Taarnet (herlig Ud sigt) 9—6 om Sommeren; 9—2 om Vinteren. Entré 25 Øre.
