council and also the large festival hall, both beautifully appointed and strikingly decorated. In an anteroom the walls are liung wich large tapestries woven from Lorens Frolich’s drawings with motives from Danish legends. The rear part of the town hall encloses a handsome open court with the ”Bear fountain” (by Bindesboll and Skovgaard). T h e l a r g e t o w e r is accessible from the ”Borgertrappen” stairway. A smaller staircase leads to the town museum in the attic, from where a spiral staircase leads up to the clock and the balconies. At twelve o’clock and six o’clock the bells play the old watchman’s verses, by which the police of the time (the watchmen) announced the passing of the hours. (In some few remote lying towns this custom is still observed; in Copenhagen the watchmen were abolished in 1863). T h e C o p e n h a g e n t o w n m u s e u m com­ prises a collection of models (particularly town hall models, and more recent Copenhagen arclii- tecture), parts of buildings (street doors etc.) from demolished old buildings in Copenhagen (18th and 19th centuries) and also fire extinguish- ing apparatus, guild objects etc. Open from 10—4 for ordinary business. B ø r s e n er opført 1619—40 af Christian IV i nederlandsk Renæssancestil under Ledelse af Byg­ mestrene Lorenz og Hans v. Stenwinkel. Bygnin­ gen er en af Københavns smukkeste, maaske den skønneste Repræsentant for Sen-Renæssancens Bygningskunst i Norden. Den er 126 Meter lang og 19 Meter bred, bygget af røde Mursten og prydet med Baand og Skulpturer af Sandsten. Det lange kobbertækte, irgrønne Tag er brudt af talrige Kvistgavle og, over Rygningen knejser et 54 Meter højt, dristigt komponeret Taarn, hvis Spir dannes

T h e E x c h a n g e was erected in 1619—40 by Christian IV in Dutch Renaissance style under the direction of the architects Lorenz and Hans v. Stenwinkel. It is one of the most beautiful buildings in Gopenhagen and is perhaps tlie finest specimen of late renaissance architecture in the north. It is 126 M. in length and 19 M. wide, built of red bricks with sandstone moulding and sculp- tural ornamentation.
