Summary. Attempt to Promote Blood Regeneration after Hæmatemesis or Melæna. A control group of 11 patients given the usual ulcer cure of this department12 and iron showed the same blood regeneration as 21 pa­ tients treated one to two years before10 (fig. 1.). 5 pt.s given in addi­ tion various liver preparations did not regenerate their blood any better than the control group (fig. 2 ). 9 pt.s were given ascorbic acid, 100 mgrm.s daily intravenously for 6 days immediately after admission. 4 of these had to be excluded on account of complica­ tions. 4 out of the remaining 5 pt.s had a regeneration which was better if not definitely better than that of the control group (fig. 3). Still, I am satisfied that with a longer period of treatment and a greater number of patients, this would be the case. In fig. 4 , diffe­ rent types of regeneration are shown. The uppermost curve is from a patient treated with ascorbic acid. During the period of treatment (the first 6 days), the R . B. C. values rise rapidly; afterwards, the rise is slower. The middle curve is from a pt. of the control group (intersected by the standard regeneration line). The lowest curve is from a pt. on the same diet given no iron till the 28 th day.
