On the 5th of April the killed were buried in the naval church-yard. The solemn pro­ cession consisted of a numerous train of admi­ rals, generals, divines, literati, citizens, in short, every individual, whose bosom glowed with love to his country. Anthems, written for the occasion, resounded from every lip, and tears of mingled grief and joy flowed from every eye. On this memorable day, subscriptions were also opened for the relief of our sufferers. To dwell on the alacrity with which every one eagerly stepped forward with his offering, would be superfluous. Those who act from a pure con­ viction that they on'y do their duty, seek no panegyric—their reward is in their own bosom; I shall therefore merely state the magnifi­ cence of the rich man’s gift, and the no less spirited zeal of the poor man’s mite.
