From the m ain-station of Copenhagen there is connec­ tion many times a day with Itoskilde about 30 kilometres from the Capital. W ith the quick trains the whole trip only lasts 30 m inutes and w ith the tourists-automobiles not much longer. Roskilde is a town of 14,000 inhabitants, situated on a hill, slanting towards the Roskilde- fjord, rtnd with a fine view on this. The history of the town reaches back to the mythical age. For a time it was the residence of the kings, but it was especially the m ighty bishops of Ros­ kilde who made it known and respected.

The days of glory were in the 12th and 13th century, when the town was among the most im portant of the coun­ try and when besides the ca­ thedral, belonging to the clergy there were 12 parish-churches, 5 rich monasteries and several charitable institutions and strong fortifications. The ca­ tholic church had its head­ quarter in Denmark here until the Reformation in 1536. B ut with this the im portan­ ce of the town was over. The bishops moved to Copenhagen and w ith them all the power and prestige of the town dis­ appeared. I t went back very strongly, was devastated by
