VI died here and the palace was torn down in 1810—12. From Kungsted Strandvejen passes the manor of Nivaa- t/aard, with its cosy and sty lish park and an interesting picture-gallery (see page 150). After this Strandvejen passes through the fishing villages of Humlebcek, Espergcerde and Snelckersten, all of which are very much frequented during the summer and where a num ber of elegant villas have been built by rich people from the capital. Here, as all along the coast, is a lively bathing-sea- son. Elsinore, is the term inus of the coast-railway and is beau tifully situated at the narrow end of the Sound and rig h t opposite the Swedish town of Ilelsingborg in Scania (4,7 km ).
There is a heavy traffic be tween the two towns and steam- ferries are running all day. Elsinore is a town of about 10,000 inhabitants and a very active and enterprising town. The harbour is of a great im portance, when the w inter is hard and the navigation through the Sound to Copen hagen is suspended. As a collector of the Sound dues from 1429 until this institution was abolished in 1857, Elsinore in this period became the most known of all the towns of northern Europe. During the summer the town and its environs are vi sited by great numbers of tourists. The railway-station of E l sinore is a modern and sta tely building in renaissance,
