ParKs - Plantations - Monuments. In former days planting

as belonging to Copenhagen, and these two parks have been very attractive to the inhabitants of the city. Kongens H ave (The K ings Garden) (Map 7) was redu­ ced to its present size in the beginning of the last centu­ ry. The former flower-garden in 1785 was made into a drill- ground. The area for Kron- prinsessegade was cu t of after the fire in 1795 and the fence with the pavilions was built after the draw ing of the a r­ chitect Meyn. In the begin­ ning of the present century, the royal orchard towards Solvgade was taken into the garden area and the new monu­ mental gate opposite the art- museum was built after the draw ing of the architect Ilel- weg Moller. Originally the g a r­ den was laid out in the still French style, of which one is still reminded by the two main-avenues, Kavalfirgangen and Damegangen (the cava­ liers- and the ladies walk). B ut of these are only a few and far between rests left, hidden behind the houses. The only public garden of any size inside the old lim its of the city, is the Rosenborg Have (Kongens Have — the Kings G arden). This was laid out a t the same time, as the ltosenborg Palace was built, 1000—18, and its site a t th a t time was outside the town. When the walls and the areas of the fortifications became municipal property and was parcelled out for building, areas at th e”same time-were set aside for a number of new parks and plantations. The parkareas were considera­ bly increased, when a t the beginning of the century, it was decided to lay out the great areas of the commons and of the still more distant Lerso as parks. Although si­ tuated in another community the Frederiksberg Garden and Sondermarken are considered
