of a street or a p art of it and is seized by the most different feelings. Christiansliavn originally was taken from the ocean. In olden times the waves of the Sound here rolled over sandy banks, b u t C hristian IV in 1018 decided, th a t a port and a fortress should rise at this spot. Both have set their stamps on this p a rt of city. The streets were laid ont sy- metrically crossing a t right angles w ith the main-street, Torvegade, into which one en­ ters after having passed across the Tvnippelsbro. One canal divides the town cross-wise in the two parts »over Vandet« (across the wa­ ter) and »neden Vandet« (this side the w ater). The

center is the Christianshavns Torv (square). Towards Amager and the land-side Christiansliavn is surrounded by its old tree- planted beautiful wall with the broad idyllic moats. Towards the North of the town is the Royal Dock-Yard, situated on several isles and holms. The most northern is Nyholm, where the old main- guard is situated, b u ilt in 1744, with its tower ending in a royal crown. Near by was erected in 1745 an immense crane, now ser­ ving as a beacon. Permission to inspect the Dock-Yard may be had by application to the Navy-Department. To the rig h t in Torvegade, the first street is Strandgade,
