S VENDBORG, the most southerly town on the island of Funen, population about 18.500 — frequent railway connexion with Odense, Nyborg and Faaborg. Svendborg is very beautifully situated on Svendborg Sound, surrounded by' the islands Taasinge, Thurø and the slightly more remote lying Langeland and Ærø etc. There is a ferry connexion several times daily with Langeland, Taasinge and Ærø, and a bridge connexion with the island Thurø. Regular steamship routes are maintained on Copenhagen and Hamburg. The maximum draught for vessels entering Svendborg harbour approaching either from east or west is 23 ft. The depth of water in the eastern harbour basin is 23 ft. and in the northern harbour 12-17 ft. The length of quayage is about 6.000 ft. in addition to the private quays belonging to three flour milis which are provided with elevator plant for discharging. Railway lines on all quays in the harbour. Harbour light as shown on chart. Leading lights through eastern part of the Sound to the harbour and from west to Lehnskov Point. Pilot charges as per tariff (Denmark’s pilo­ tage fees). Pilots resident in town and by both entrances to Svendborg Sound. Post Office, Telegraph and Telephone in same building near the harbour. Time signal at Post Office 1 p. m. Custon House close by harbour. Water supply, excellent drinking water, water supplied at all quays in the harbour.

Shipbuilding and repairs, Svendborg Ship- building Yard with two floating docks, gross capa- city 1800 tons and 800 tons respectively. Crane, capacity: 40 tons. J. Ring Andersen’s Shipbuil­ ding Yard for the construction of wooden ships — two moderil slipways, gross capacity 350 and 200 tons. Ampie stocks of coal, oil and provisions for vessels.
