On André Leth’s retirement the David Collection will lose a director with apronounced aesthetic sense and great insight into the history of art and culture, a person who has succeeded in building up a lovely museum while at the same time fully respecting the founder’s intentions. The thirty items described on thefollowing pages are not to be regarded as “masterpieces of the David Collec­ tion”. They have been chosen to provide an impression of the breadth of the Museum’s collecting range and also to indicate the fields that have especially enjoyed André Leth’s favour during the 24 years he has been the Mu­ seum’s director. The text accompanying each item is intended merely to whet the reader’s appetite without any Jurther preten­ sions: notes and references will therefore be sought in vain.
