A few y e ars ago th ere w as a g re at desire by som e for m aking C openhagen a free p o rt; b u t, m eeting w ith strong oppositio n, it w as reduced to th e free bonding system a t th e C u sto m -h o u se , w hich w a s , how ever, bu t of little adv antage. A t the comm encem ent of. 1852 the p o rt o f C openhagen possessed 2 9 7 M erchant vessels, o f a to tal bu rd en of a b o u t 3 5 ,0 0 0 tons. T his n um b er h a s been increased by several new steam -b o ats w hich are used in th e m aritim e trad e.
