Thorvaldsen's Museum , situ ate behind the R o y al O h a p e l, w ith a larg e open space in front extending to the S torm bro . It w as raised p a rtly by v o lu n tary co n trib u tio n s, p a rtly by a g ra n t from the M unicipal fund. T h e architect w as Mr. Bin- desbollj Inspector of B u ild in g s, w hose plan w as a p p ro v ed by the g re at S culptor him self. T h e building w as comm enced in th e y e ar 1837, but, from v ario u s obstacles an d im p ed im ents, w as not finally com pleted till the y e a r 1846. It is in the E g y p tian style o f A rc h ite c tu re , 230 feet in length, 125 feet in b readth , 46 feet in height, and consists o f two stories. In the centre of the building is an open court, 116 ft. long an d 50 ft. b ro ad , w hich contains th e A rtist’s tom b. In the fron t hall, c o rrid o r, and a p a rtm e n ts , on the grou nd or first story, are placed the w orks o f the Sculptor, and, on the sto ry above, his collections. T h e outer w alls are decorated on b o th sides w ith T uscan P ain tin g s in p la s te r , descriptive o f T h o rv ald sen ’s a rriv a l a t the T o ld b o d , and the im portatio n o f his w orks. On the sum m it o f the front and prin cip al e n tra n ce , stands the C hariot o f V ictory draw n by four horses, executed in bronze from a m odel b y B issen.
