The Kings of Denmark have always taken a great interest in the theatre and the Royal Family have their own box near the stage. The season lasts from September to June. The present budding was erected in 1874 on nearly the exact spot where the old theatre was built in 1748. The pleasant auditorium can hold 1600 people. Many works of art, both paintings and sculpture, adorn the theatre. Outside it stand the statues of Ludvig Holberg and Adam Oehlenschlager. In the stylish Court Theatre at the Christiansborg, a historie theatre museum has been arranged,' containing numerous reminiscences from time past. The Royal Theatre has always enjoyed a favoured position amongst the Danes. Work for the future is done daily, as there are schools, “nurseries” , for the drama, opera and ballet, connected with the theatre. Poets have sung it’s praises, Hans Andersen among the rest, in one of his fairy tales, and Søren Kierkegaard, the Christian philosopher, gave it a considerable place in his works. The Danish National Stage has been a source of spiritual rejuvenesence for a great many people. From it emanated life and enjoyment, brightening and dispersing the wor- ries of humdrum days.
