In 1800, the activity in the naval department attained its zenith of glory. Government pur chased immense loads of timber in Pomerania, which received an unexpected addition from a large quantity of oak, that had been contracted for by a Mr. Echardt, on account of Sweden. It is needless to dwell on the reasons, that may have induced the government of that country, in which no ships of force have been built since the war with the Russians, not to fulfil an en gagement of such a nature. The amount of the timber was calculated at about 300,000 dol lars. Mr. Ilohlenberg had now materials in abundance, and in the same year he laid down and launched a number more ships. But in order to shew the rapid effects of this man’s industry, it will be necessary for me to state the number of ships in the Danish navy at two opposite given periods.
