On this circuit, which Mr. Knudsen made in the summer of 1801, he co” ected upwards of 17,000 dollars; but his praise-worthy efforts did not go unrewarded. The opera of Erik, the Good, was performed for his benefit, when his emoluments, it is said, amounted to 6001. such was the public anxiety to testify to wards him gratitude and esteem. At the conclusion of the piece, Mr. Knudsen came forward to return his thanks ; when he produced the Medal of Merit, conferred on him by his Majesty j and in an handsome speech, confessed his obligations to his K ing and to his C o u n t r y . Whether we had, or had not, reason to com plain of the heroic deeds of our friends, we had none to complain of their heroic songs ; in this they successfully rivalled each other. The poem on the battle, written by Mr. Wallmark,* deserves, on many accounts, the first rank. He conceived his subject with all the warmth of a noble heart, and pourtrayed it with all the imagery
