Further at Øster Voldgade Sølvgades Kaserne (Sølvgade bar­ racks) built in 1767, now headquartcrs o f the Danish State Railvvays. Opposite the Statens Museum for Kunst, (art gallcry), (see page 37). To the North, in the park “ Østre Anlæg” the Hirschsprungske Sam­ ling, (see page 36). Along the railvvay terrain to Nyboder, a whole quarter o f the town built by King Christian IV around 1630 for naval personal. Just north o f Nyboder a bcautiful bronze statue of King Christian IV. Following the Kastclsgraven (moat o f the citadel) through “ Grøn­ ningen” (the green) to Esplanaden with (Kastellet) (the citadel), built in 1662. Behind the two entrances “ Sjællandsporten” and “ Norgesporten” (Zealand Porch and Norway Porch) still a number o f the original bud­ dings can be seen. f. i. the chapel (Kastelskirken), built in X703/4, con- nected with the jail, the windmill, erectcd in 1687, and further the main guards budding and the residence o f the commander. To the east the beautiful harbour promenade Langelinje, beginning from the citadel, curving and stretcliing into the harbour. Among the many monuments here is the Gefion Springvand, (Gefion fountain), by Anders Bund- gaard (1907). Near the quay a monument to the naval hero Ivar Huit- feldt, with guns and cannon balis from his ship, the “ Dannebrog” , salvagcd from the sea bottom in Køge Bugt (Køge bay, south o f Copen- hagen), where the battie took place in 1677. On the opposite side of the moat the monument by Bindesbøll of the battie o f the roads o f Copenhagen in 1801 (Lord Nelson). On a boulder in the shallow water the Little Mermaid (Den lide Havfrue), a bronze statue by Edv. Eriksen. Behind the yachting harbour the monument by Rathsack to the fallen sailors o f the first world war. North o f the yachting harbour the memorial stone to the polar explorer Mylius Erichsen. In the park at the entrance o f Langelinje the Anglican St. Alban’s Church. From Langelinje Amaliegade leads to Amalienborg Castle, private residence o f the king, built in 1754-60, by Eigtved. After the fire o f Christiansborg in 1794 Amalienborg was bought by the king. The castle consists o f four palais, originally budt for four noble families. Two o f these palais are linked by a colonnade o f wood, in Ionic style. H. M. King Frederik IX lives in the palais with the clock. (Palais of Frederik VIII).
