By a concession from the State, renewed in 191!) for twenty years, the control of the telephones in Copenhagen was given to the private en­ terprise of Kobenhavns Tele- fon-Aktieselskab (The Copen­ hagen Telephone Company, L td.), whose domain of acti­ vity comprises the whole of Sealand and Amager. The fact, th a t Denmark holds the lea­ dership of Europe with re­ gard to the extensive use of the telephone, is due largely to the strong development of this company. Inside the territo ry of the concession on Ja n u a ry 1 st 1925 were 352 public centrals with about 135,000 subscri­

bers, of which no less than 95.000 in Copenhagen with 119.000 apparatus, which is nearly one telephone-appara­ tus to every fifth inhabitant. This density of telephones is due to a special technical a r­ rangement, which expecially by the use of the part-system (common line for until 4 sub­ scribers) has made it possib­ le to make the rates so low, th a t the telephone is not con­ sidered a luxury, but a necessity and work-saving ap­ paratus.
